What Is Considered A Good Diet If You Have Type 2 Diabetes?

Diabetics must always watch their glycemic index to ensure proper insulin levels in their body at all times; and a good way to do that is by eating a vegetarian diet that's also a diet that's low in carbohydrates. If you do that, then the glycemic index for diabetics will be low and they'll be eating healthier.

A diet for diabetics, particularly a diet for type 2 diabetes, is simply a plan which includes helps control your blood sugar levels. You'll have to do proper meal planning, and will need to count your carbohydrate intake. A diabetic must be far more consistent than a person who's body has normal balanced levels of insulin.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body isn't manufacturing enough insulin or you don't respond normally to the insulin your body does create. Sugar (glucose) can build up in the blood, if this happens; and high blood sugar raises the chance of diabetic complications such as heart disease, kidney disease, and blindness.

So, when you're trying to manage diabetes, lowering your blood sugar is one of your goals. Maintaining an active exercise schedule, is just as important as controlling your glucose levels. Those who have type 2 diabetes are generally taking medicine that help keep blood sugar levels in check.

A diet for diabetics is just a diet that emphasizes vegetables, fruits and whole grains (being very careful to limit the number and amounts of the fruits. As a diabetic, your body will respond to excess calories and fat by creating undesirable rises in blood sugar. So, rather than being a restrictive diet, a diabetes diet should be thought of as a healthy-eating plan. If you include foods which are naturally rich in nutrients, such as vegetables, and naturally low in fat and calories like fruits¡ then you're almost there.

If you select the healthiest foods, and combine those in the right amounts, then you have a good diabetic diet. The most important thing, though, is to stay steady-as-she-goes. Don't make any drastic changes. Whatever you do, do it slowly and keep it steady. If you do that, then you'll see far less flip-flop of your blood sugar levels.

Cane sugar, and carbohydrates which break down into such sugars, will be the things you should be careful to limit. The more you vary the things you eat, particularly the amount of carbohydrates you eat, the more difficult it will be to maintain good balanced blood sugar levels. If you already consume a good variety of very healthy foods, then good for you. You'll just have to adjust your carbohydrate portion sizes to maintain controlled blood sugar (glucose) levels.

Your doctor can refer you to a registered dietitian, who can help you plan the types of foods that will be most beneficial. Whenever a diabetic thinks of changing your eating habits, you should consult with your doctor before you make any drastic changes.

As a diabetic, I'm sure you're well-versed in the concept of 'exchanges'. A serving in one group is called an "exchange". An exchange has about the same amount of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and calories in it, and therefore it should have the same effect on your blood sugar. Thus, you might trade one small apple for a third cup of cooked pasta. Eating either of these would have the same effect on your blood sugar levels. A dietician might recommend that you group your foods into different categories, such as starches, fruits, meats and fats.
